WebDwarf Fortress combat is rarely "one-shot", nor is it a long process of whittling away a huge pile of "hit points" (which do not exist in DF). Your best tactic is to try to quickly cripple or stun an opponent, so that you can then deliver a killing blow against a (momentarily) defenseless target, and then move on to the next opponent. WebMost combat systems are like, you have 100 hp on your energy bar and no matter what, you can't get in trouble from the first attack as the opponent's max damage is 30. Those systems work well in games, but it's totally unrealistic.
